Estimate based on 238 words per minute. Actual time varies with text difficulty and reader familiarity.
What this tool does
The Reading Time Calculator estimates how long any piece of text takes to read. Paste the full text, or simply type a word count, and pick a reading speed — slow, average, or fast.
Reading-time estimates help writers set reader expectations, editors plan content length, and course creators estimate lesson duration. Many blogs show a "3 min read" label; this tool gives you the number behind the label.
You can switch between three speeds to understand how different audiences will experience the same text. A dense technical article read slowly can take twice as long as a casual list post skimmed quickly.
How to use it
- Choose whether to paste text or enter a word count directly.
- Select a reading speed: Slow (180 wpm), Average (238 wpm), or Fast (300 wpm).
- Read the estimated reading time, shown in minutes and seconds.
How it works
- Reading time is word count divided by words per minute. We use 180 wpm for slow reading, 238 wpm for average, and 300 wpm for fast reading.
- These figures come from commonly cited adult reading-speed research. They are estimates and will vary with text difficulty and reader familiarity with the subject.
Example
A 1,000-word article is about a 4-minute 12-second read at average speed, but only 3 minutes 20 seconds for a fast reader and 5 minutes 33 seconds for a slow reader.
